Background: an Italian company run by Bolton Food the European leader in the canned tuna market.

Ingredients = Mackeral fillets
Boneless
Packaging is unmistakable Rio Mare. Pink long tin with a good picture of chargrilled filets.
(I bought in Spain so non English wording)
In tin appearance: interesting that on opening the fish filets only filled half the tin. On moving the filets they looked good and appealing – not too much liquid. Firm natural looking filets with grill marks and pepper flakes. On removal from tin silver shiny Mackeral skin. Soft and thin.
Texture: firm and juicy. Not oily at all. Aroma mild and light acetic.
Mild flavour. Light pickling and some cheeky chilli heat.
Aftertaste: slight. Doesn’t repeat as Mackeral can.
Overall: a good textured and flavoured Mackeral – not dissimilar to a fresh steamed Mackeral. The “grilled” flavour doesn’t come through in a big way and not smoky at all.
A great fish product with the qualities of steamed fresh mackerel.
[I ate with a flatbread, garlic mayo, cucumber/tomato/ parsley salad)
Suggestion:
Would be excellent with potato salad, steamed asparagus/ chargrilled zucchini salad etc)
Score 6.5/10
Price : around £4.50 per tin (2024)
